By Kat Sanders
Apple and the iPhone were the talk of the town when the nifty gadget made its appearance a year or so ago. What’s surprising though is the fact the iPhone is still in the limelight; and the reason this momentum is being sustained is the number of useful applications that are being written for this device, applications that cater to people in diverse fields. If you belong to the healthcare sector and own an iPhone, here are a few apps you may be interested in checking out:
• Epocrates: This application is useful for doctors, pharmacists and anyone else in the healthcare business who deals with drugs on a regular basis. It provides continued and updated access to information on drugs, both branded and generic, the right dosages, warnings, adverse reactions and contraindications. This vast drug database allows you to check for interactions between drugs and also perform calculations like BMI and GFR.
• Lexi-Comp: This database provides information on both drugs and diseases, including their symptoms and treatment methods, charts and tables with statistics updated from the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry, and other clinical literature that helps people in the healthcare industry make informed decisions that ultimately benefit their patients.
• iChart EMR: If you’re the kind who likes to have your finger on the pulse of patient information, this is the right app for your iPhone. A comprehensive medical charting software, this package allows you to keep track of and manage your patients’ medical history, including treatment, medication, dosages and billing.
• ACLS: An application that helps emergency workers, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) contains a set of algorithms that help you provide cardiac care and treatment for other life-threatening illnesses based on a set of symptoms. It works like your own pocket encyclopedia, one that’s regularly updated to keep in tune with the latest trends in medical services.
• MediMath: A medical calculator that allows you to perform up to 60 kinds of calculations and also provides discussions on how you can interpret their results. You can also use the Favorites section to perform calculations that you do on a regular basis to save time.
