Thirty years ago, China had virtually no cosmetic surgery and today it’s a multibillion-dollar industry. According to Lisa Ling, next to tourism, automobiles, and real estate, beauty is the fourth-biggest industry in the largest country in the world. From common procedures like nose jobs and breast implants to the uncommon, China is fast rising in cosmetic procedures.

Like with any other trend, problems are arising. Below are 7 controversial cosmetic surgeries that are now surging in China.

The treatment essentially restructures the upper eyelid to have an additional crease more akin to a typical Caucasian eyelid. Although the cosmetic surgery remains semi-taboo, the procedure itself is simple and safe, as far as plastic surgeries go with up to 50,000 people a year requesting it in China.

    2. Leg Lengthening : If you’ve ever wanted to be taller, this controversial surgery just might help with that. The frightful process involves having your legs cut and lengthened with metal rods. Hundreds of women signed up for this procedure every year, which costs anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000. The article tells of a patient who had the procedure, gained ten centimeters, yet five months later, she’s still not able to walk. In fact, the procedure is so controversial it has been banned and sources are unsure to if and how much it is still going on.

This Chinese made instrument claims to perform many functions, including breast augmentation. It claims to enlarge them by one to three centimeters in 20 days. It also claims to help people lose weight and slim the body.

    4. Transgender Procedure : The surgery to go from man to woman or vice versa is controversial no matter what continent you are on. In China however, the authorities are getting involved. According to this article, candidates for surgery must show an agreement from police to change their sex on their identification cards once the procedure is complete. There are no federal Chinese laws at this time that forbid the surgery, but proposed guidelines include no criminal records, notification of immediate family, minimum age of 20, single, and must undergone therapy for at least one year.

    5. Foot Binding : This practice dates back centuries and involves binding the foot to make it smaller. A smaller foot is/was considered to be more beautiful and elegant. Controversial in that patients fear getting what they pay for, procedures start as low as $800 for a liposuction. Breast augmentation, face and neck lifts, and nose jobs range from $2,000 to $2,700 dollars. You can even get a tummy tuck for $3,300.

    7. Tattoos : Technically, getting a tattoo is considered a form of cosmetic surgery. However, just as Americans are getting tattoos of Asian symbols, so too are Asians who get English words. Ironically enough, the words chosen by the Chinese are gibberish to the average Westerner.
